Falsified Record: Living Family

We adopted a girl in 2006 and were told that she was a true orphan and was abandoned and living in an orphanage. We hired a searcher and found out that she wasn't a true orphan at all, she had living birth family.

With a bow to Henri Matisse--Color

This week's drawing was inspired by the creole dancer illustration done by Henri Matisse. http://www.henri-matisse.net/cutouts/j.html I really liked the whimsical shape that created the dancer, and I tried to emulate that with my own illustration; Man Catching a Fish This was done using two color schemes simultaneously. The primary color scheme is present with the yellow background, and the red and blue hues are at their most intense; this was done to draw the viewer to the man's torso and fish's body. I chose to keep the shapes of the two images similar, mostly for a symmetrical look in the middle of the painting. The remainder of the image is done in an analogous color scheme, using the area from yellow to blue. I focused on lighter value greens and blues so that the eye would focus even more on the fish and the body. The single brown line portraying the fishing rod allows the eye to go from the fisherman to his prize.

My Ideal Drawing

This is M.C. Escher's Day and Night. I have always loved and appreciated M.C. Escher. His imagination, mathematical precision, and subject matter all blend to create some of the best art out there. Growing up, my mom got me the complete works of M.C. Escher, and I would spend hours trying to recreate his art. I am a big fan of math, and as a result, Escher's work was appealing to me. This particular piece represents the ideal drawing because it does such a great job blending the real with the surreal. Like the Charles Addams drawing,  Embellished Elevation of the Carnegie Museum , this piece is a both a subjective and objective drawing. I would classify this as a conceptual drawing. I have always liked this piece and his self portrait  through the glass globe quite a bit.

Spatial Relationships

His gallery is amazing.  In this picture, Dies Irae, the last day of judgement is depicted. The illusion that bodies are being judged and some are "heading downstairs" is captured in this powerful image. Flat or 2D space: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman_with_a_Hat  In Matisse's famous painting, Woman with a Hat, the image of the woman is basically flat. Color provides some depth, but not a lot.
